Cleansing or “detoxing” in accordance with the Dr. Sebi diet generally refers to Dr Sebi’s prescribed process for cleansing, also known as an intra-cellular cleanse.

While “juice cleansing” or fasting may also be considerations if you are looking to cleanse or detoxify your body, this article will focus on cleansing as it pertains to Dr. Sebi’s intra-cellular cleanse.

According to the Bio-Electric Cell Food: Intra-Cellular Cleansing Guide, an Intra-cellular cleanse simply put is “a cleansing or cellular rinsing of every cell that makes up the “whole” body systems”, and is what Dr Sebi and the USHA research institute suggests may be necessary in order to correct any imbalances and damage done over time.

This imbalance or “damage to your natural biological structure” refers primarily to nutritional deficiency and biochemical imbalances as a result of excess calcification, toxins, acids and mucus build up (bioaccumulation) in the body and its core systems.

The intra-cellular cleansing process is done through a course of compounds designed to breakdown cell debris followed by a rinsing of “the entire cellular matrix”.

As you can imagine, this is not something to be undertaken lightly and will require substantial change to your lifestyle, which in and of itself takes discipline and self-control.

Your colon is critically important to your well-being and must be cleansed and detoxified before natural health can be fully restored. That said, the colon should not be the only organ that is cleansed, leaving other organs in a toxic, nutritional deficient state would likely result in the persistence of ill health.

The colon is your body’s first line of defense and is populated with billions of “good bacteria” or “healthy flora”. These exist within the intestines and aid in the digestive and toxin removal process.

During an intra-cellular cleansing some of these beneficial bacteria will be lost and such must be replenished.

Dr. Sebi recommends this be done through use of electric cell food, and in the diet but also with Acidophilus (Lactobacillus acidophilus), a probiotic bacteria which helps the body “synthesize essential vitamins in the intestinal tract, produce enzymes important for proper digestion of food, promote regularity and good gastrointestinal health and contribute to pleasant breath”.

The liver is a vital organ that supports most other organs in the body, it not only aids in digestion through the production of essential biochemicals but also:

Your kidneys filter blood by removing toxins, excess minerals, as well as urea. Additionally, they “maintain the critical water-electrolyte balance essential for efficient metabolic functioning”.

If the kidneys become “congested” they become less effective which can lead to a number of health conditions.

Your lungs extract oxygen from the atmosphere you breathe in everyday. This is then transfered into the bloodstream and “exchanged” with carbon dioxide which is released from the bloodstream back out into the atmosphere.

Like other vital organs associated with toxin removal, the lungs can become over-burdened with “excessive internal pollution” which impairs their function.

The lymphatic system is a highly complex network of lymphatic vessels that carry a fluid called lymph (meaning water in Latin) around the body and “directionally towards the heart”.

In addition to transporting “fats, proteins, and other substances to the blood system”, the lymphatic system functions as an immune system defense.

It also contains waste products and cellular debris along with bacteria and proteins. These toxins are removed via the capillaries through the dermis of the skin and mostly excreted when we sweat though some are “dumped back into the intestines for removal”.

The skin is the largest organ responsible for expelling toxins from the body, as well as the largest one to “ingest toxins from the environment through the use of hair treatments, deodorants, and other cosmetic preparations”.

Skin is made of up two main layers which include the epidermis; the outer layer that acts as a water-proof barrier and contains no blood vessels. Below the epidermis we have the dermis; a layer of connective tissue that “cushions the body from stress and strain”.

As well as housing nerve endings responsible for our sense of touch and heat, the dermis also contains hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands and blood vessels to name a few.

Dr. Sebi’s cleansing compounds break down cell debris, the “cells then undergo a series of rinsing that completes the process”.

As your body progressively cleanses and detoxifies years of accumulated toxins, acids, and mucus – you may experience symptoms similar to those which led to you seeking to improve your well being and undertake a cleanse in the first place.

“If this is your first Intra-Cellular systemic (whole body) cleanse, as your body cellular matrix is being cleansed and rinsed, feeling unwell for the first few days is not uncommon. This is the precursor of a healing crisis”.

According to an article on healthline.com, “a healing crisis is a temporary worsening of symptoms after beginning a complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) treatment. You may also see it called a homeopathic aggravation, a detox reaction, or a cleansing reaction”.

Essentially, as the body begins to rid itself of “toxins, acids and mucus residues” that have built up and accumulated in your body over the years, you may experience “headache, uneasiness, flu-like symptoms and fatigue, skin eruptions, nausea, , sleepiness, constipation, diarrhea, head or chest cold, ear infections, boils, or any other way the body uses to loosen and eliminate toxins”.

It is very important that you do not try to suppress these temporary symptoms with drugs or else the healing process may become interrupted.

Additionally, you may experience an onset of symptoms that are similar or “identical to the disease” that the cleanse is trying to address. “Sometimes pain and symptoms during the healing crisis are more intense than that of the actual manifestation of disease state; know that it is temporary and necessary”.

“However, there is an important difference: elimination”.

During a healing crisis, the body’s entire system works in unity to “eliminate waste products and set the stage for regeneration, revitalization and re-fortification of the bodies cellular matrix”.

An initial healing crisis usually lasts around three days but if the energy of the individual is low, it may last a week or more.

Also note, it is possible that you may have to go through more than one healing crisis before imbalances in the body are fully corrected and optimum health is restored.

“An individual in a chronic “locked” disease or imbalanced state may have to go through cycles of healing crisis, with each one improving the condition”.

Before attempting to cleanse it’s important to first ensure that you are putting the right things into your body. There is really no point going through any kind of cleanse that concerns pH or alkalinity, let alone an intra-cellular cleanse, if you’re diet is still too acidic.

What is intra-cellular cleansing?
